Saturn retrograde: a yearly check on your foundations

About once a year, Saturn goes retrograde for roughly four and a half months. Astrologers read it as a time to review your foundations. You don’t have to believe the planets decide anything to use it that way. A date on the calendar that says “slow down and check your commitments” is useful on its own.

What Saturn retrograde means

Astrology is a symbolic language that goes back to Babylon in the second millennium BC and picked up pieces from Egyptian, Greek and Roman thought along the way. In it, Saturn stands for discipline, responsibility, structure and hard work: the stern parent of the chart.

Retrograde means a planet looks like it’s moving backward from where we stand on Earth. It isn’t. It’s an effect of Earth passing it in orbit. Astrologers say that while Saturn is retrograde, its themes turn inward: less about outside duties like work and more about the reasons behind the commitments you’ve made.

Read plainly, that’s an invitation to an honest review. Which of your routines and promises still fit the life you want? Which did you take on out of fear, habit or someone else’s expectations?

Ways to use it

• Look at your limits. Saturn is the planet of limits. Instead of fighting yours, name them. Limited time and energy make you choose, and choosing makes your goals clearer.
• Build one habit. Pick something small and keep it: a regular bedtime, a daily walk, ten minutes of sitting still. Discipline is mostly doing the small thing again tomorrow.
• List what you’ve done. Review isn’t only criticism. Write down what you’ve finished in the last year. Most people find it’s more than they thought.
• Check your balance. If one part of your life is taking everything, take some of it back for rest, a hobby or the people you love.
• Sit with it. A few minutes of meditation each day makes it easier to notice what you think and feel about your commitments, instead of running on autopilot.
• Ask someone. If the review turns up something hard, talk it through with a friend or mentor you trust.

None of this needs a planet to start. Saturn retrograde is simply a yearly reminder to take stock of where you are, decide where you want to be, and do the slow, unglamorous work of getting there.
