The Power of Silence
Lately I have been reflecting on the power of silence. Many Native American cultures understood this, and when asked a question or told something, they would sit in silence as they thought deeply before responding. Patience in responding was a sign of respect to the person that they were talking to, but it was also a way to harness and channel ancient wisdom. However, when the colonizers encountered this, most misunderstood this silence as a lack of intelligence.
Our Western cultures have indoctrinated us from an early age to an unnaturally fast paced way of thinking. In elementary school we are misled into thinking that whoever can raise their hand the fastest and provide the correct answer is the brightest among us. On the playground we learn that the quickest comebacks will propel us in the hierarchies of childhood. They really do condition us for the hampster wheel at an early age.
I am making a commitment to myself to try to slow down my reactions. To try to learn the value and power of silence. To turn down the transponder and to amplify the receiver. And to be more open to hearing my calling.
For me, this song embodies these thoughts. I'm sharing it now in hopes that it can help others as it has helped me.
