This captivating book covers the spiritual journey of self discovery of a man named Siddhartha during the time of Gautama Buddha. The book describes developing understanding of reality and enlightenment through one’s own experiential knowledge. Hesse actually lived as a hermit for a long period of time in order to finish this fascinating book!
Here’s a little quote from one of Hesse’s letters
